Telling Time and Time Zones
In class today, I learned the definitions of time zones, UTC, GMT, Daylight Saving Time, and standard deviation. Also, we learned how geographers calculate standard deviation. Time zone is a region of the globe that observes a uniform standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard by which the world regulates clocks and time. GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is is the standard time in Great Britain which is used to calculate the time in the rest of the world. Daylight Savings time is the time as adjusted to achieve longer evening daylight summer by setting the clocks an hour ahead of the standard time. Standard deviation is a quantity calculated to indicate the extent of deviation for a group as a whole.

Time zones tend to follow the boundaries of countries because it is easier for areas in close commercial or other communication to keep the same time. For example, if time zones were divided evenly, China would have four different time zones, but the government decided it would be easier for China to be on the same one time zone. The UTC is the prime meridian. When you move east from the UTC, the time would be one hour ahead. When you move west from the UTC, the time would be one hour behind. For example, in Maryland it might be 3 PM, it would be 12 PM in California because California is three time zones west from Maryland.
