Intro to Human Geography
Today I learned that geography is a field of science devoted to the study of the lands, features, inhabitants, and the phenomena of the Earth and planets. A branch of geography is human geography and it deals with the study of people and their communities, cultures, economics, and interactions with the environment by studying their relations with and across space and place. Another branch of geography is physical geography. Physical geography is the branch of natural science which deals with the study of processes and patterns in the natural environment like the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and geosphere, as opposed to the cultural or built environment which is the domain of human geography. The difference between human and physical geography is that human geography is the study of people, their environment, and how they live where as physical geography is the study of processes and patterns of the natural environment. I also learned that there are three types of of maps that geographers use which are physical, political, and thematic. A physical map is a type of map that displays physical features of the location. A political map shows the spatial organization of the location and a thematic map is a type of map that tends to "tell a story" about the location.
