Interpreting Maps
Today, in class, I learned that geographers describe where things are by using map scale. I also learned what map scale, projection, meridian, longitude, parallel, latitude, and prime meridian is. Map scale refers to the relationship or ratio between distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground. Projection is a method for taking the curved surface of the Earth and displaying it on something flat. Meridian is a circle of constant longitude passing through a given place n the Earth's surface and the terrestrial poles. Longitude is the angular distance of a place east or west of the meridian. Parallel is the imaginary line extending around the Earth parallel to the equator. Latitude is the angular distance of a place north or south of the Earth's equator. Prime Meridian is a planet's meridian adopted as the zero of longitude.
